The Problem: For more than twenty-two years, HBP has worked to reduce the dangerously high rates of infant deaths, illnesses, low birth weight and repeat pregnancies in the District of Columbia by reaching out to high-risk, low-income, substance-abusing pregnant and parenting women, men and their families. Since 1991, the HBP has provided pregnancy-related services to more than 10,000 women and their children in the target community. Your support provides basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, medical services, transportation, and education to continue this proven program for at-risk D.C. residents.
The Solution: Without our services, these women would not receive pre- and post- natal care, and thereby risk poor health outcomes for their babies such as prematurity, low birth weight, and other preventable conditions including infant death. But now, these women get the care, life skills, and support they need to have healthy pregnancies, beautiful children, and be equipped to support themselves and their families, moving into productive lives that contribute to our community.
Our Biggest Current Need. Homelessness has escalated in our community. Young, pregnant, homeless women approach HBP on a regular basis seeking safe haven shelter. They live on the streets, vulnerable and alone. Because of the support of compassionate people like you (and with special thanks to The Perennial Strategy Group, Lamell McMorris, Bazilio Cobb Associates, Freddie Mac, Rosenfeld Rumford Steckler Family Foundation, and Sheri and Rob Rosenfeld), in 2013 HBP has been able to add a new component to its core offerings — the new Perennial Transitional House for pregnant, homeless teens.
Help these women have a safe, clean home and food to eat.
Our Do More 24 goal: $29,540 which will provide …
- 4 months’ of household expenses for the pregnant, homeless teens at Perennial Transitional House (rent, utilities, food, diapers, transportation, and household necessities)
- Additional necessary items for the house: vacuum cleaner, tool kit, ironing board, outdoor benches, humidifiers, and a swing set for the children
Thank you for your generosity as together we help at-risk D.C. families have healthy babies and move out of the cycle of poverty.
