Little Lights Urban Ministries
has raised !
Since its beginning almost 20 years ago in the back of a tae kwon do studio, Little Lights has existed to empower the kids, teens, adults, and families of southeast DC, particularly those in Potomac Gardens and Hopkins public housing. Over the years Little Lights (with the help of 2,000+ volunteers) has shown its commitment to our community by providing afterschool and mentoring programs to more than 1,000 kids and teens.
At Little Lights, we recognize that kids do not exist in an academic vacuum and that in order to bring about lasting change we must take a holistic approach, one that works with the kids, as well as their families, schools, and broader community.
We do this through our relationally-focused, award-winning academic and mentoring programs, where tutors and mentors provide individualized, one-to-one attention to our students.
Through our Family Center, located at Potomac Gardens, we provide parenting classes, job search assistance, and diapers. Each year we also employ several young adults from the community as interns, and we help create jobs for the men on the Clean Green Team, a landscaping training and employment program and the largest of our workforce development programs.
Isaiha, a 9th grader who attended our programs, beautifully describes what Little Lights is all about: “One of Martin Luther King’s favorite quotes, ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?’ is a great quote for Little Lights because mostly everyday Little Lights is helping young kids like me too achieve their goals in life.”
